TMPA responds to possible ‘Sandra Bland Act’

TMPA Executive Director Kevin Lawrence spoke with KBTX about the possible changes the “Sandra Bland Act” would bring to the law enforcement profession.

The proposed bill involves increased mental health and de-escalation training for law enforcement, along with changing the law that allows officers to jail citizens for minor traffic violations. The proposal also calls for the elimination of consent searches during traffic stops.

“We believe [this] is just simply a knee-jerk reaction to an anecdotal incident,” said Lawrence. “It would create bad public policy. It would benefit criminals; it wouldn’t benefit public safety.”
